Frederic W. Farrar was born in 1876 in London, England. He graduated from Cambridge University in 1896 with an Honors Degree in Mathematics and the degrees of D.Sc. and Litt.D
In 1904 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and a year later a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. In 1900 he started what would become a 20-year career as a geologist with the British Geological Survey. In 1910 he moved to South Africa, where he became a lecturer in Geology at the University of the Witwatersrand until his retirement in 1931.
A lifelong student of Sigmund Freud, he wrote several books on psychoanalysis and many others on psychology, religion, philosophy, and art. He died in 1950 in Cape Town, South Africa
