In 1904 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and a year later a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. In 1900 he started what would become a 20-year career as a geologist with the British Geological Survey. In 1910 he moved to South Africa, where he became a lecturer in Geology at the University of the Witwatersrand until his retirement in 1931.

A lifelong student of Sigmund Freud, he wrote several books on psychoanalysis and many others on psychology, religion, philosophy, and art. He died in 1950 in Cape Town, South Africa
